Demo for the opening of the Dherynia crossing point




The Famagusta Initiative and the Famagusta Our Town organization are to hold a demonstration demanding the opening of the Famagusta Dherynia crossing point.

The two groups held a press conference on Tuesday ath the House for Cooperation in the buffer zone to make a call to people from both sides of the divide to participate in the demonstration on Saturday 31st March at 10 am at the Dherynia crossing point.

Speaking on behalf of the Famagusta Initiative, Dr. Okan Dağlı resembled Famagusta with a body that has been cut in half with one side of being lifeless. “This is something that we cannot approve of nor accept” he continued.

Dr. Dağlı while putting forward the demand for the immediate opening of the crossing point called for “the opening of all roads and crossing points which will unite us”.

Speaking on behalf of the Famagusta Our Town Organisation, Pavlos Iakovou said that their aim is to create “a homeland in which people will be able to feel that they are Cypriots not Turkish or Greek Cypriots”.

When asked what the reason behind the demonstration is, in light of the fact that officials have made statements that works on the Dherynia road are nearing completion, Pavlos Iakovou said that they have been hearing these kind of statements since 2015. He added that they believe that the creation of a country without boarders is possible and that it is necessary for the closed city of Varosha to be returned to its pre-1974 legal owners.

Students left without a classroom in Kyrenia schools

By Kyriacos Kiliaris The school year in the north of Cyprus was off to a sour start on Monday with KTOS, the Turkish Cypriot elementary teachers' union reporting that a number of children were left without a classroom in public schools in Kyrenia due to the schools being overcrowded. According to Sener Elcil the General Secretary of the union 75 elementary school children, despite being enrolled for the school year, were not able to able to join their classmates as classrooms are overcrowded. Elcil said that the Kyrenia Maarif elementary school was unable to find a classroom to accommodate 40 students while, another 35 students of the Karakum Elementary School were also left without a classroom. He lushed out at the coalition saying that the head of the education office in the north, Ozdemir Berova, had stated a while back that they “had set aside the money for a new school in Kyrenia but are unable to find a field available to build”.

High price for Turkish Cypriot water

By Kyriacos Kiliaris Turkish Cypriots are complaining that they are paying a very high price for the water coming from Turkey, claiming they are coughing up double what it actually costs the councils. According to Turkish Cypriot Newspaper Havadis, while water costs 2.30 TL upon arriving at the councils’ reservoirs, the price more than doubles by the time it reaches consumers in the north. Turkish Cypriot consumers pay an average of 5 TL (€1.26) per tonne, with a household consuming 10 tonnes of water on a monthly basis, paying on average 43 TL. They are also complaining of injustice in setting the price as each of the 28 councils in the north is fixing the price according to their own criteria. Prices range from 15 TL (€3.80) to 62 (€15.68) TL for ten tonnes of water. Danish man tracks down TC father

By Kyriacos Kiliaris Thomas Knudtsen, a Danish citizen from the small town of Stevns, was reunited with his Turkish Cypriot father whom he had never met before with the help of a TV show called ‘Without a Trace’ (Sporlös). Knudtsen, 52, through the Danish TV programme, was able not only to reunite with his father, but also found he has approximately 250 Turkish Cypriot relatives! Searching for his biological father, Knudtsen asked the TV reality programme to help him in his search. He told reporters that his father was a Turkish Cypriot from a village in the Morphou region. A ‘Without a Trace’ team first travelled to London, where his mother had met his father Mehmet Huseyin in a restaurant where he used to work at the time. The DR1 crew, however, were not able to find any trace of Huseyin and decided to expand their search to the north of Cyprus.
